What Are the Different Types of Dental Implants?
Each type ofย implant-supportedย prosthetic offers unique benefits based on the number of missing teeth and the desired level of stability and permanence.
Single tooth implants
A single tooth implant is a single implant used to replace one missing tooth, It will:
Implant-Supported Bridges
When multiple teeth are missing, implant-supported bridges are similar to a traditional dental bridge, but they anchor to implants. This design can be used to replace several adjacent missing teeth in a row.
Overdentures (Snap-In Denture Implants)
This prosthetic design offers profound stability and security compared to traditional dentures. Overdentures prevent the slipping and discomfort associated with traditional dentures by attaching securely to implants. This design must be removed every evening, just like a traditional denture, in order to be cleaned.
Fixed Arch (All-On-4 dental implants)
A permanent alternative to dentures, these fixed bridges are securely screwed into four or more implants, providing stability and function without covering the palate. They remain in place at all times, mimicking the feel and function of natural teeth.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots surgically placed into the jawbone to provide a strong foundation for replacement teeth. They serve as a long-term solution for individuals who have lost one or more teeth for various reasons, such as decay, gum disease, injury, or congenital conditions. False teeth implants are designed to look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Hereโs a breakdown of the key components and the process involved in dental implants:
- Implant Fixture:ย This is the part of the dental implant surgically implanted into the jawbone, typically made of biocompatible materials like titanium. It fuses with the bone through a process called osseointegration, providing a stable foundation.
- Abutment:ย After osseointegration, an abutment is attached to the implant fixture. It serves as the adapter for the artificial tooth crown.
- Artificial Tooth (Crown):ย The final restoration is often a custom-made artificial tooth or dental crown. It matches the shape, size, and color of the patientโs natural teeth and is attached to the abutment, completing the dental implant.

The process of getting a dental implant typically involves several stages:
- Initial Consultation:ย Your journey begins with a thorough consultation, during which the dentist evaluates your oral health, takes X-rays, and discusses the treatment plan.
- Implant Placement: the implant fixture is placed into the jawbone. You needn't worry about pain during the procedure because, with our sedation dentistry techniques, you will feel little to no pain throughout the entire procedure. A healing period follows, which typically lasts 4-6 months. During this healing period, patients typically wear a โflipperโ(i.e., removable partial denture) to cover up the space where the implant is healing under the gum tissue.
- Implant Uncoveryย After the healing period is completed, a second, less invasive surgery is performed called an implant uncover. A special tool is placed during this appointment called a gingiva formerย (sometimes called a โhealing abutmentโ). This gingiva former helps to contour the tissue prior to the final impression appointment.
- Final Impression Appointment:ย 2 weeks after the implant uncovery appointment is the final impression appointment. An impression is taken of the newly contoured tissue and sent to a lab. The lab uses this impression to make an implant abutment and crown
- Crown Placement:ย Once the custom-made implant abutment and crown comes back from the lab, it is attached to the implant, blending seamlessly with your natural teeth.
Dental implants are designed to be long-lasting and durable, potentially lasting for decades or a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. Factors influencing their longevity include oral hygiene, overall health, lifestyle choices, bone density, implant quality, proper placement, follow-up care, and addressing bruxism.ย Regular check-upsย every six months with your dental provider are crucial to help monitor implant health and address any concerns promptly.
Dental implant procedures are known for their relatively low discomfort levels and have a well-documented success rate of approximately 97%, supported by extensive literature. Compared to the traditional โBridgeโ restoration, which requires the removal of otherwise healthy tooth structure on teeth adjacent to the space, a single tooth implant offers a more conservative approach with an increased likelihood of success, all at a comparable cost.
